Duane Sorenson, Stumptown’s founder, came to me with this bag redesign project. He had a bag with a slit in the front of it and wanted a way to display a ton of information about growers, farms, flavors, locations and more. Clyde Common is an English, gastro-pub style restaurant adjacent to the Ace Hotel in Portland, Oregon. Amazing food, drinks and atmosphere, accompanied by a huge selection of bourbon and scotch.

Nate Tilden, Clyde’s owner, wanted a menu that could be updated daily; food on the front, an abundant wine list in the middle, and drinks and desserts on the back.

One of the bartenders liked the meat cleaver I drew for the business cards and matchbooks enough to get it permanently added to her body.

Stumptown created the Direct Trade program because the Fair Trade requirements just weren’t enough. Direct Trade not only certifies the treatment of the workers on the farms and the price paid for the coffee (which is far higher than Fair Trade), but also guarantees the quality of the coffee. We made a simple mark that could be used on a ton of things.

This is a little ad/postcard we (Frank James, Lille, & Rock ‘N’ Rose) put together for a Black Friday sale event on E. Burnside in Portland. Chris Hornbecker was nice enough to help us out and shoot the photo.

Stumptown asked me to put this graphic together for their latest batch of Guatamala Finca El Injerto – Pacamara coffee.

This is a graphic I made for a tshirt and later made into a pattern.

These illustrations are from a killed Coca-Cola spot at W+K. I’ll post the spot soon.

Frank James is an awesome clothing store on E. Burnside in Portland. I designed & built the dressing rooms, shelves, clothing racks, cash wrap and rebuilt an old jewelry case to match. Go in and try out the counterweighted dressing room doors.

This was my sketch of how I wanted the doors to work. They came out pretty true to the original idea in my head.

This is the alternate version of the bag, designed for the New Seasons Market bulk bins, with a place to write in the coffee you put into the bag. 

I designed and screen printed this poster for a Nada Surf concert in Portland. The Nada Surf type was created from the letters on the Marshall head that they use in their shows.

I designed and sewed this messenger backpack because the standard messenger bag I was commuting with was killing my shoulder. After over four years of use, it’s still holding up just fine.

I originally saw a rolled back padding like this on a Missoula Smoke Jumper’s pack on a fire in Montana. I still really like the look and the way it sits on both sides of your spine when you wear it.

This is the key required to gain access to the Coraline premiere after party. I love the tag. Rumor has it that they spent over 1/2 a million on the party…which is A LOT for Portland. Probably designed by the talented Wieden+Kennedy Studio peeps. Thanks to Helmy for letting me snap a photo of his key. Apparently my Blog doesn’t have enough clout to get me invited…YET.

I did this identity for my girlfriend’s side business of making things; from greeting cards to headbands. I made a stamp of it so she could put it on almost anything. Check out Stink Face on Etsy or on her blog.

Most of these concert flyers were done for shows at the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland.

When James Selman of Weights&Pulleys asked me to help on this project, I jumped at the opportunity. Who wouldn’t want to help create the identity for Lance Armstrong’s new bike shop in Austin, Texas? 

Located in downtown Austin, inside of a 50′s era building, the ID had to match the city, the building and Lance…and so did the neon sign.

I was able to fly down for the opening and take these photos. And then I got to go mountain biking on Lance’s ranch where I rode a really sweet full suspension Gary Fisher…and then hung out at a BBQ with Gary Fisher. 

Juan Pelota is the coffee shop connected to Mellow Johnny’s bike shop in Austin, Texas. I worked for James Selman of Weights&Pulleys to help create this identity.

They ended up going with this option for a more “Austin” look and feel.

This ran one month as an ad in Barista Magazine. 

While working at Wieden+Kennedy I had the opportunity to team up with two coworkers on a pro bono project at Ockley Green, a K-8 school in North Portland. We were assigned the task of helping a group of middle schoolers update their school’s image. I designed, printed and assembled these books using studio materials and we gave them to the students to be used as workbooks/sketchbooks. They came up with the wonderful slogan ‘We Shine’ to represent their school.

I used these cardboard envelopes for the front and back covers so the students could carry whatever they wanted in their sketch books.

The kids loved them. It was a great project to be a part of.

After building a smaller, black version of one of these trees as a Halloween decoration, I was asked to make a giant winter tree-scape for the holiday party. This is what I came up with (with some serious help from Nicole Selis & Christin Spagnoli). 

I couldn’t seem to find an affordable dining room table that I liked, so I built this one.

I did this poster as part of Starbucks’ Summer Sounds free concert series in NYC. It was part of a publication that ended up in every Starbucks in the city and featured a different poster artist and band on every page. I fell in love with Hot Chip while making this poster.

The fly didn’t make it on to the final poster because Starbucks thought it was “Anti-Appetite”. I replaced the fly with a pigeon…not much more appetizing, but they were cool with it.

I did this poster for free and it totally payed off. Viva Obama!

A few random illustrations for some Target presentations I worked on at W+K. I should draw more so I can get better at it…and because I really enjoy it.

This poster was created for my friends at the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association to announce the winners of the Pacific Northwest Book Awards. The pink wood behind the type is from a photo I took of a construction site in Brazil.

John Blasioli makes amazing clothing for men. His first line was known as a broken spoke. This is a look-book I put together for him a few years back. Check back soon for his new line under a new name. Look-book photos by Bryan Myss.

The sign for his former studio/storefront on NW 23rd & Savier that he shared with the extremely talented Liza Rietz. Liza is still there, so stop in and pay her a visit. You won’t regret it.

Fixies was an idea I had for a business that would bring cycling and coffee even closer together. A coffee shop with indoor bike parking, a ride-thru window, and a staff of bike mechanic baristas. Oh, and of course, Stumptown Coffee.

Nike designed a shoe specifically to fit the Native American foot. The role of this poster was to motivate activity within the Native American communities.

This pledge card was included with every pair of shoes.

These illustrations were for a W+K / Nike campaign that almost happened. Almost only counts in horse shoes…and hallofritz.com.

This D.I.Y. project was for Starbucks and the Providence Bridge Pedal in Portland. Without much of a budget, you often end up doing things yourself. Which isn’t so bad if you’re into that sort of thing.

I love the die-cut on these vouchers. Special thanks to die-cutting for making these cooler.

Protect the Pacamara!

We did these shirts as the final part of a project promoting Ockley Green School. The students worked with us to create an image-improving slogan for their school. They came up with ‘We Shine’ and both their energy and their drawings inspired my design for the Tshirt.

I designed and screen printed these posters for a show at the Doug Fir.

I designed the Heineken E-Chair during the W+K Heineken pitch using Heineken’s signature ‘Smiling e’. I don’t know how comfortable it would have been, but it looks pretty cool. 

P:EAR stands for Program: Education, Art & Recreation. P:EAR is a Portland non-profit that works with homeless youth. They often connect with kids through art, music and recreational activities and they have a gallery downtown where they show the kids’ artwork. This poster was for their fourth annual fundraising event. The event was a huge success.

A graphic for a tshirt label I had in my head called fünf. Only a few fünf t’s were ever produced.

This poster was for one in a series of 21 Bruce Mau lectures on urban vernacular. The task was to create a typeface for the headline that spoke to the space he was to speak at. In this case, the space was under the Morrison Bridge in SE Portland. Oh, and the lectures didn’t actually take place.
